Pimpri Chinchwad, 28th October 2025: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated the establishment of a modern food and drug testing laboratory at Moshi. The project is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within eight months. Once operational, the laboratory will allow adulteration reports to be processed locally, significantly reducing delays in regulatory action, officials said.
тАЬThe work on the new laboratory in Moshi will be completed in the next eight months. Once operational, adulteration test reports will be available immediately, expediting action against violators,тАЭ said Suresh Annapure, Joint Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA is responsible for curbing food adulteration and the sale of counterfeit medicines. Its teams routinely conduct inspections, especially during festivals and peak market periods. Currently, food samples collected during these drives are sent to private laboratories for testingтАФa process that often takes several months. This delay hampers swift enforcement.
To address this, a new laboratory with advanced testing equipment is being constructed within the FDAтАЩs Moshi office premises. The facility will also include a training center and a dedicated storage warehouse. Officials said that the construction work is nearing completion and that the lab will soon be equipped for operations.
The new facility will enable faster and more accurate testing of food items, medicines, cosmetics, and raw materials, thereby strengthening the departmentтАЩs monitoring and enforcement efficiency.
According to officials, the laboratory will house 38 instruments for food testing and 35 for drug analysis. Previously, limited manpower and high workload had constrained the FDAтАЩs operations. However, with additional food inspectors joining the department, testing and enforcement are expected to become more streamlined.
