Pimpri, 28th October 2025: In a major step toward restoring the sacred Indrayani River, the state government has granted administrative approval for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal CorporationтАЩs (PCMC) ambitious тАШIndrayani River Revitalization Project, estimated to cost Rs 526 crore. The project aims to rejuvenate the river, which holds immense religious significance for the Warkari community, within two years.
Originating from Kurwande village in Maval taluka, the Indrayani River passes through Dehu and AlandiтАФimportant pilgrimage townsтАФbefore merging with the Bhima River at Tulapur. It travels for about 18.8 km through Pimpri-Chinchwad city, where industrial effluents and untreated sewage from local drains have severely polluted its waters.
Over the years, the riverтАЩs condition has deteriorated due to chemical waste, domestic sewage, and encroachment. The PCMC prepared the revitalization plan to tackle these issues through integrated measures for pollution control, flood management, beautification, and ecological balance.
Key Components of the Project
Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni said the project will focus on four core objectives тАФ river conservation, flood control, water treatment, and beautification. The major works will include:
Construction of a rainwater drainage system.
Installation of interceptor drains to divert polluted water to sewage treatment plants (STPs).
Stone embankments and flood-control structures.
Riverbank strengthening and greening of both banks.
Setting up Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) of 40 MLD and 20 MLD capacity near River Residency and the cemetery in Chikhali.
Beautification and forest conservation along the river stretch.
Funding Structure
The Rs 525.82 crore project will be implemented under a shared funding model:
50% grant from the Central and State Governments, released in three phases.
50% share to be contributed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
The project received clearance from the State-Level Technical Committee in September 2025, and with administrative approval now in place, tendering work will begin soon, officials said.
Environmentalists and Warkari leaders have welcomed the move, calling it a long-awaited initiative to revive one of MaharashtraтАЩs most revered rivers.
