Wakad, 13th January 2026: As campaigning intensifies for the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections in Ward No. 25, development-related issues have taken centre stage, with the under-construction international-standard badminton stadium in Wakad emerging as a major topic of discussion.
The project is being developed through the initiative of former corporator and BJP candidate Rahul Kalate.
The foundation stone of the badminton stadium was laid in 2024 with the aim of promoting sports culture, fitness, and nurturing international-level players from the region. The stadium, designed to host international-standard matches, is nearing completion and is expected to provide advanced badminton facilities to IT professionals, local residents, and aspiring athletes from the area.
The facility is not limited to a single court but is being developed as a modern sports stadium. It will house eight badminton courts and seating capacity for around 550 spectators, allowing multiple matches and tournaments to be held simultaneously. Once operational, the stadium is expected to offer players the infrastructure required for training and competition at national and international levels.
While Pimpri-Chinchwad has several public and private badminton courts, the city continues to face a shortage of large-scale, fully equipped training halls that meet modern standards. In this context, the Wakad badminton stadium is being viewed as a significant addition to the cityтАЩs sports infrastructure and a potential milestone for local athletes.
The project aims to provide facilities that go beyond recreational play, focusing on structured training, skill development, and competitive preparation. Local residents have welcomed the initiative, stating that accessible and high-quality sports infrastructure can play an important role in encouraging youth participation in sports and improving overall community health.
Despite the presence of multiple academies in the city, citizens have long demanded affordable, well-equipped public sports facilities with higher capacity. Responding to this demand, the stadium is expected to support the long-term growth of sports culture in Wakad and nearby areas.
Speaking about the project, Rahul Kalate said the badminton stadium would soon be dedicated to public service and would serve as a foundation for producing skilled players in the future. He added that the facility would offer local youth an opportunity to train on global-standard courts, helping develop discipline, skills, and competitive spirit. Kalate also said efforts would be made to introduce swimming and other sports facilities on similar lines in the future, with the broader aim of promoting a healthy lifestyle and strengthening WakadтАЩs identity on the international sports map.
Key benefits of the stadium include access to sports facilities for all age groups, opportunities to train and compete on international-standard courts, promotion of fitness and public health, and the creation of a high-quality recreational space for families and youth in the area.
