Dighi, 14th March 2026: A toddler had a narrow escape after her hand became trapped in a lift door at a housing society in the Dighi area of Pune, an incident that has raised fresh concerns over elevator safety in residential buildings after CCTV footage surfaced online.
The mishap occurred when residents were using the elevator in the building. Two young girls had entered the lift along with their family members when the incident took place.
As the elevator door began to open, one of the girls stretched her hand toward it. While the door was retracting, her hand suddenly got stuck in the door mechanism, creating panic among residents standing nearby.
People present at the spot immediately halted the lift and rushed to help the child. After several minutes of careful effort, residents managed to free her hand from the door.
Fortunately, the toddler escaped without suffering any serious injuries.
The CCTV footage of the incident later went viral on social media, drawing strong reactions from citizens. While some users questioned the safety standards of elevators installed in residential societies, others highlighted the need for parents to closely supervise young children while using lifts.
The incident has also revived memories of a fatal lift accident reported last year in the Charholi area under the jurisdiction of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. In that case, 12-year-old Ameya Phartade died after being crushed in a lift at a housing society, reportedly while playing near the elevator when it moved while he was partially outside.
