Pimpri Chinchwad, 11th April 2026: In a significant development for urban mobility in the twin-city limits, a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Bhakti Shakti тАУ Wakad тАУ Nashik Phata тАУ Chakan Metro corridor has been formally submitted to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
Designed to seamlessly connect major residential hubs with the booming Chakan industrial belt, the fully elevated corridor promises an efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly transit solution. The revised DPR, submitted on February 26, 2026, outlines an expanded scope with a total route length of 47.215 kilometers, comprising 34 stations.
Major Upgrades and Alignment Changes
The revised blueprint introduces several critical modifications to better serve the regionтАЩs transport needs:
Expanded Footprint: The corridor has been extended from its original 42.262 km to 47.215 km. The number of stations has increased from 31 to 34, resulting in a revised estimated completion cost of тВ╣12,937.23 crore (up from the earlier тВ╣10,383.89 crore estimate).
Rerouting for Better Access: The metro alignment has been specifically rerouted to cover high-density areas, including Bhosari MIDC, Landewadi, and Bhosari Gaon.
NHAI Integration: A major structural feature includes a 17-kilometer integrated double-decker alignment with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stretching from Bhosari to Chakan. Crucially, executing this will require the dismantling of the existing flyover at Bhosari.
Scalable Capacity: All station infrastructure will initially be built to accommodate 3-car metro rakes. However, built-in provisions will allow for a seamless upgrade to 6-car configurations as passenger volume demands.
Future Connectivity and Ridership Boom
Planners have embedded future expansions directly into the current design. Provisions extend beyond the terminal stations to ensure that a Bhakti ShaktiтАУTalawade MIDCтАУKharabwadiтАУChakan loop can be connected in subsequent phases. Additionally, essential track connectivity has been provisioned at Bhujbal Chowk to integrate the anticipated Wakad-Katraj-Shewalewadi line.
According to the DPRтАЩs growth models, daily ridership is expected to hit 3.22 lakh passengers by 2032. This is projected to climb steadily to 5.09 lakh by 2042, 6.69 lakh by 2052, and reach a massive 7.80 lakh daily commuters by 2062.
Financial Blueprint and Land Acquisition
The тВ╣12,937.23 crore mega-project is backed by a robust funding model. The lionтАЩs share of the core project costтАФ60% (тВ╣6,695.81 crore)тАФwill be funded through bilateral or multilateral loans from external agencies. The Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra will each infuse тВ╣1,721.71 crore as equity, holding a 15.43% share each.
The PCMCтАЩs direct contribution includes a тВ╣320.96 crore grant earmarked for land acquisition, rehabilitation, and relocation. The project necessitates 19.57 hectares of land overall. Notably, 16 hectares of this is required for a central metro depot near the Bhosari District CentreтАФland that is likely already in the possession of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
Once officially sanctioned by the state and central governments, the Bhakti Shakti-Chakan metro corridor has an estimated completion timeline of five years.
