Pimpri Chinchwad, 16th April 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has decided to revive the public bicycle sharing (PBS) system in the city, with a pilot project launched at two locations in Pimple Saudagar.
The decision was approved during a standing committee meeting held on Wednesday, chaired by committee president Abhishek Barne. Municipal commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi, city secretary Mukesh Kolap and other officials were present at the meeting.
The bicycle sharing initiative was earlier introduced with much fanfare by Pimpri Chinchwad Smart City Limited. However, the project had to be discontinued due to poor public response, along with issues such as theft and vandalism of bicycles.
The civic body has now reintroduced the scheme in collaboration with a private firm, Preway Technologies Pvt Ltd, based in Bhosari. Under the arrangement, the company will operate the service across the city and share 10% of its revenue with the municipal corporation. The firm will generate income through bicycle rentals and advertisements at docking stations.
In the first phase, the service has been rolled out at two spots in Pimple Saudagar on a trial basis. Bicycles will be available for rent for two hours each in the morning and evening.
The rental charges have been set at 25 paise per minute for regular bicycles, with a monthly pass priced at Rs 350. For electric bicycles, the rate is 50 paise per minute, with a monthly pass costing Rs 550. Daily passes are priced at Rs 60 for regular bicycles and Rs 100 for electric bicycles.
Barne said that if the pilot project proves successful, the initiative will be expanded across the city.
