Pimpri Chinchwad, 28th April 2026: A tense rescue operation unfolded in Pimpri Chinchwad on Monday night after an unidentified man climbed a 132 kV high-tension transmission tower in Yamuna Nagar area of Nigdi, triggering panic among residents and drawing a massive crowd to the spot.
Police said the incident came to light around 9.15 pm on Nigdi-Talawade Road when locals noticed the man perched atop the electricity tower and alerted authorities.
Teams from the police and fire brigade rushed to the spot and initially tried persuading him to come down safely. However, when he refused to respond, officials decided to launch a rescue mission.
Authorities suspected the man, believed to be in his 20s, was mentally unstable. As a precaution, the power transmission line had to be shut down before any rescue attempt could begin.
Fire officials said it took nearly one-and-a-half hours to suspend the 132 kV supply, followed by additional time to discharge static current and complete earthing procedures to make the structure safe.
Meanwhile, police managed traffic diversions and controlled a crowd of thousands who had gathered to witness the dramatic operation.
Once the tower was secured, fire brigade personnel used a truck-mounted aerial skylift and brought the man down in a high-risk rescue completed within minutes.
He was later taken into police custody and shifted to the psychiatric ward of Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital for treatment and observation.
Nigdi police said efforts are underway to establish his identity and trace his family members. No injuries were reported during the operation.
