Pimpri Chinchwad, 9th May 2026: Strong winds that swept through Pimpri-Chinchwad on Saturday afternoon exposed alleged lapses in safety measures at an ongoing Pune Metro construction site near Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, after metal sheets from a temporary shed were blown onto the busy old Pune-Mumbai highway.
No injuries were reported, though the incident triggered panic among commuters and raised concerns over safety arrangements at the metro work site.
Construction work on the Pimpri-to-Nigdi Metro extension is currently underway in the area. Temporary tin sheds had been erected at the site to provide shelter to workers. However, around 3 pm, gusty winds accompanying sudden weather changes caused several metal sheets attached to the structure to come loose and fly onto the road.
At the time of the incident, vehicular traffic was moving along the highway. Eyewitnesses said a two-wheeler rider narrowly escaped after one of the metal sheets landed directly in front of him.
Following the incident, questions are being raised over safety protocols at Metro construction sites in the city. Officials at Pune Metro confirmed the incident and claimed that necessary instructions have been issued to the concerned stakeholders to take adequate precaution during the work.
A senior Metro official said тАЬThe incident has been taken seriously at the highest level of the Metro administration and the officials from the safety department are investigating it. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible following the inquiry. A comprehensive safety audit is also being conducted along the under-construction Metro corridor.тАЭ
