Pune/PCMC, 22nd May 2026: Providing much-needed relief from the sweltering summer heat, Pune and its surrounding areas witnessed sudden thunderstorms and widespread rainfall on Friday evening. Driven by intense daytime heating and soaring humidity, the skies opened up, with Chinchwad emerging as the wettest area, recording a substantial 60.0 mm of rainfall by 1200 UTC (5:30 PM IST).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecasted mainly clear skies that would become partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening. The local forecast accurately predicted that thunderstorms with lightning and light rain were very likely across the Pune neighbourhood.
While the IMD had anticipated тАЬlight rain,тАЭ the localized downpours were quite intense in specific pockets. Following Chinchwad, Dudulgaon and Hadapsar recorded significant rainfall at 38.0 mm and 37.5 mm, respectively. Shirur followed closely with 35.5 mm.
The rainfall was widespread but varied significantly across the district. Other notable recordings included:
NDA: 29.5 mm
Ambegaon: 28.0 mm
Rajgurunagar: 27.0 mm
Bhugaon: 21.0 mm
Kurvande: 17.0 mm
Lohgaon: 16.0 mm
Central areas of the city experienced a more moderate spell. Both Shivajinagar and Pashan recorded around 13.0 mm of rain (13.1 mm and 13.0 mm, respectively), while Koregaon Park received 9.5 mm. Meanwhile, peripheral areas like Narayangaon (6.5 mm), Lavale (4.5 mm), and Talegaon (0.7 mm) received only light drizzles. Interestingly, Magarpatta remained completely dry (0.0 mm) despite the surrounding weather activity.
Prior to the evening showers, citizens endured a highly uncomfortable, hot, and humid day. According to the IMDтАЩs daily observation slip, maximum temperatures across the region ranged from 35.4┬░C in Chinchwad to a scorching 41.5┬░C in Magarpatta. Relative humidity levels peaked at a suffocating 95% to 100% in several stations, including Shivajinagar, Pashan, and Chinchwad.
Meteorologists note that the intense daytime heating, coupled with high moisture in the air, created ideal conditions for strong convective cloud formation, ultimately triggering the evening thunderstorms.
The sudden spell of rain has brought daytime temperatures down significantly, washing away the dust and offering Puneites a pleasant and cooler start to the weekend.
Forecast for the Coming Week
Looking ahead, the IMDтАЩs local forecast indicates a return to a drier, albeit warm, weather pattern for Pune and its neighbourhoods.
From Saturday, May 23, through Thursday, May 28, the weather bureau predicts mainly clear skies during the morning hours, which will gradually become partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening.
Daytime temperatures are expected to remain high over the next six days. Maximum temperatures in Pune city (Shivajinagar) are forecast to hover between 38┬░C and 40┬░C, peaking around May 23 and 24, before slightly dipping to 38┬░C by Tuesday, May 26. Nighttime minimum temperatures will provide some comfort, settling consistently around the 24┬░C to 25┬░C mark. Surrounding areas like Lohgaon and Magarpatta are expected to remain slightly warmer, with daytime highs consistently predicted to touch 41┬░C to 42┬░C throughout the week.
