Pimpri Chinchwad, 26th May 2026: The civic administration in Pimpri Chinchwad said that all safety standards for the Rakshak Chowk flyover project have been complied with and the flyover is safe for commute.
The clarification came after three accidents were reported within two days after it was inaugurated for public. Maval MP Shrirang Barne and local residents were among those who raised concerns over the safety.
The civic official said that safety inspection was carried out through the appointed Project Management Consultant, while an accredited safety audit consultant registered with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was also appointed to conduct a comprehensive traffic safety review.
Officials said the consultant agency conducted site inspections, surveys and a detailed study of the underpass and connecting ramps. Based on the findings, several safety measures have been implemented to ensure safe vehicular movement. Overtaking of vehicles has been prohibited inside the underpass and on both approach ramps.
Mandatory speed limit signboards restricting vehicle speed to 30 kmph, in accordance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards, have been installed at appropriate locations. Slow-moving vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians have been barred from entering the underpass and ramps, with separate service roads provided for them.
The route has been reserved exclusively for motor vehicles, while a separate lane with a maximum speed limit of 30 kmph has been designated for the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).
To regulate speed on the descending ramps, transverse rumble strip markings as per Indian standards have been installed. Solar-powered yellow blinking lights have also been placed at merging and diverging points, as well as at accident-prone locations, to alert motorists and encourage them to slow down.
The civic body said reflective median markers with yellow retro-reflective strips have been installed on protective barriers to improve visibility during nighttime. Traffic control signboards indicating the 30 kmph speed limit have also been installed throughout the stretch.
The underpass being constructed at Rakshak Chowk on the Sangvi PhataтАУKiwale road is nearing completion, and traffic movement has currently been diverted through an alternative route, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) said on Tuesday. Civic officials appealed to motorists to strictly follow the prescribed speed limit and traffic regulations while using the stretch.
Pramod Ombhase, Chief Engineer of PCMC, said all observations raised during the safety audit of the underpass ramps had been addressed. тАЬCitizens should strictly adhere to the speed limit of 30 kmph and follow all traffic regulations while using the route,тАЭ he said.
Additional Commissioner Kuldeep Jangam said the underpass project was nearing completion and traffic had currently been opened through an alternative arrangement. тАЬThe underpass will help reduce congestion and ensure smoother travel. Citizens must follow the speed limit and traffic rules. Private four-wheelers and two-wheelers should not enter the BRTS lanes,тАЭ he added.
