Pimpri, 12th December 2025: Despite mandatory rules requiring a licence for keeping dogs and cats, only 817 dog owners and 32 cat owners in the city have obtained the necessary permits. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) estimates that more than 10,000 residents own pets, prompting the administration to launch a special enforcement drive and impose penalties on unlicensed pet owners.
According to the PCMCтАЩs veterinary department, the city has recorded 1,70,840 dog-bite cases over the past ten years. To control the stray dog population, the civic body has carried out 43,680 sterilisation surgeries in the last five years. Officials estimate that the city now has around one lakh stray dogs, along with a rapidly growing number of pet dogs. However, most pet owners still do not register their animals with the corporation.
To streamline the process, the civic body introduced an online pet licence facility on August 4, 2022. The system initially received a positive response, with 671 citizens applying online in 2023. The licence is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. The fee for both new licences and renewals is тВ╣75.
The online application requires details such as the pet ownerтАЩs information, petтАЩs name, colour, weight, gender, rabies vaccination status and a photograph. Rabies vaccination is mandatory for both dogs and cats, and licence holders must ensure their pets do not cause nuisance. The corporation also reserves the right to cancel licences in case of complaints.
Despite the convenience of the online system, only 849 pet owners have obtained the required licences so far. PCMC has now decided to take strict action against those keeping pets without a licence. A fine of тВ╣500 will be imposed on violators, said Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Khot. Veterinary Officer Dr Arun Dagade confirmed that the special enforcement drive will begin soon.
