Pimpri, 15th December 2025: Safety and construction standards at a Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing project in Charholi have come under scrutiny after a massive iron entrance gate collapsed, injuring a local resident and triggering sharp criticism from beneficiaries.
The incident occurred around 8.30 pm on December 13, when the main gate of the PMAY complex, weighing approximately 1.5 tonnes, suddenly gave way and fell on Rahul Jadhav, a resident of the area. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.
According to eyewitnesses, Jadhav narrowly escaped a fatal outcome as the gate reportedly tilted forward while collapsing instead of falling vertically. Locals said the consequences could have been far more serious had he been trapped beneath the heavy structure.
Residents of the housing complex alleged that the accident was a direct result of substandard construction and poor maintenance, claiming that the project has suffered from structural issues since it was handed over. They said repeated complaints regarding defects, including widespread water leakage affecting nearly 90 per cent of the homes, have gone unaddressed.
Following the incident, residents expressed strong resentment and demanded strict action against the contractor and responsible officials, accusing them of negligence and inadequate supervision. They said plans are underway to file a formal complaint at Dighi Police Station and to organise a protest march against the municipal corporation over alleged lapses in the execution of the PMAY project.
The incident has once again raised concerns over quality control, safety audits and accountability in government-funded housing schemes, prompting calls for a thorough inspection of similar projects to prevent future mishaps.
