Chakan, 13th February 2026: Around 50 passengers had a narrow escape after a PMPML bus caught fire near the Mahindra company gate in the Chakan MIDC industrial area. The vehicle was completely gutted, but no injuries were reported.
The bus, operating between Nigdi and Mahalunge MIDC, was reportedly an electric vehicle deployed as a special service for industrial workers. According to preliminary reports, smoke began emanating from the front section of the bus while it was on its way to Mahalunge.
Sensing a possible technical malfunction, the driver immediately stopped the vehicle. Acting swiftly, he and the conductor evacuated all passengers before the situation escalated. Within minutes, flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire bus and triggering panic in the surrounding industrial zone.
Fire brigade teams rushed to the spot after being alerted and worked to bring the blaze under control. However, by the time firefighting operations concluded, the vehicle had been destroyed.
Early indications point to a possible short circuit as the cause of the fire, though officials have stated that the exact reason will be confirmed only after a comprehensive technical investigation.
The incident temporarily disrupted traffic in the busy industrial belt, a key commuting hub for thousands of workers. While there were no casualties, authorities acknowledged that the complete loss of the vehicle has resulted in significant financial damage.
An official inquiry has been initiated, and calls are growing for a detailed technical audit of PMPML buses to ensure passenger safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
