Sangvi, 12th March 2026: In an effort to spread awareness about thalassaemia and help children access life-saving treatment, a free bone marrow cross-matching camp will be organised at the District Hospital in Aundh on March 13.
The initiative is part of a statewide campaign titled тАЬOne Step Towards Thalassaemia Liberation,тАЭ aimed at supporting children suffering from the genetic blood disorder and guiding families about possible treatment options. Children from Pune and nearby districts are expected to participate in the camp.
Officials from the state health department said the camp will provide specialised testing and medical counselling by experts to help determine the compatibility required for bone marrow transplantation, which is considered one of the most effective treatments for thalassaemia.
тАЬThese cross-matching tests usually cost anywhere between Rs2,000 and Rs15,000 at private diagnostic centres depending on the type of test involved. At the camp, they will be conducted free of cost to ensure that more families can access the service,тАЭ a statement from the department said.
Kailash Bawiskar, Deputy Director of the Health Department, said bone marrow transplantation offers a long-term solution for many children living with the condition.
тАЬA successful transplant can enable a child to overcome thalassaemia and lead a normal, healthy life. Through the efforts of the Thalassaemia Support Group, more than 90 children from Maharashtra and other states have already undergone successful transplants and are now living healthy lives,тАЭ Bawiskar said.
Health officials have encouraged families of children diagnosed with thalassaemia to take advantage of the free camp and seek guidance from medical specialists regarding treatment and transplant options.
