Pimpri Chinchwad, 23rd April 2026: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has collected fines totalling Rs 70,000 from private sewage treatment plants (STPs) found discharging untreated or partially treated wastewater during a citywide inspection drive conducted between April 17 and April 22.
The enforcement action was carried out by the civic bodyтАЩs Environmental Engineering Department under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi and Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni.
Officials said a total of 21 private STPs across the city were inspected during the campaign. Of these, nine plants were found functioning at full capacity and complying with norms.
However, 12 STPs were allegedly found releasing fully untreated or partially treated sewage without proper processing. Action was initiated against the concerned establishments through the municipal nuisance detection squad, and penalties amounting to Rs 70,000 were imposed.
The civic body has warned housing societies and establishments that have either not started their sewage treatment plants or are releasing wastewater without treatment to immediately operationalise the facilities and begin reusing treated water.
PCMC said failure to comply could lead to disconnection of water supply connections.
Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi said releasing untreated sewage despite having STP facilities was a serious violation and would not be tolerated. He urged societies to follow regulations and ensure water recycling, warning that strict administrative action would otherwise follow.
