Pimpri Chinchwad, 12th May 2026 : The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has disconnected water supply to 24 housing societies for failing to operate their sewage treatment plants (STPs), while 16 other residential complexes have been fined for allegedly releasing untreated sewage into stormwater drains.
Under the existing rules, residential complexes with a built-up area exceeding 20,000 square metres are required to install STPs, treat sewage within their premises and reuse the treated water for purposes such as gardening and flushing.
According to the civic administration, a list of 62 defaulting housing societies was prepared after repeated inspections and notices. Authorities said action was initiated against societies that failed to comply despite being issued three notices.
Officials from the environment department said water supply disconnections were being carried out in phases and more societies could face similar action if violations continue. Apart from water cuts, fines of Rs 10,000 each were imposed on 16 societies for discharging untreated wastewater into nullahs.
PCMC officials said the move is aimed at improving reuse of treated water and reducing pressure on the cityтАЩs freshwater supply.
Meanwhile, representatives of housing societies criticised the civic bodyтАЩs action, saying maintenance and operation of STPs involve significant expenditure. They also alleged that in several cases, builders had handed over faulty or incomplete STP systems to societies yet they received completion certificates from municipal corporation.
