Chinchwad, 29th September 2026: Despite being one of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) key hospitals, Talera Hospital in Chinchwad does not have an independent blood bank, forcing relatives of patients to make late-night trips to other civic or private blood banks when blood is urgently required.
The shortage poses particular difficulties for patients undergoing childbirth, dialysis, surgeries or treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). Relatives of patients from economically weaker families often have to arrange blood at short notice, sometimes struggling to find the required blood group.
The civic administration plans to develop Talera Hospital as a major centre for maternity services and family-planning surgeries. The hospital conducts several caesarean sections and other surgeries every day, increasing the need for readily available blood.
Officials said anaemia is also commonly found among women from economically weaker families, particularly where nutrition is inadequate. If blood is required during childbirth or surgery, relatives are provided with blood samples and directed to the PCMC’s New Thergaon Hospital, Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) or private blood banks to arrange the required units.
The absence of an on-site blood bank can become particularly challenging when a specific blood group is required urgently. Delays in arranging blood can add to the stress faced by families and may pose risks to patients in critical situations.
Dr Sanjay Sonekar, head of Talera Hospital, said the hospital currently coordinates with YCMH and Thergaon Hospital to arrange blood for patients. “We coordinate with YCMH and Thergaon Hospital to ensure blood is made available to patients. A proposal has been submitted to senior officials to start a blood storage centre at Talera Hospital.”
A patient’s relative said the family had faced difficulties when blood was suddenly required during his sister’s caesarean delivery. “Blood was suddenly required for my sister’s caesarean delivery. I was sent from Talera to Thergaon Hospital to arrange it. If Talera had a blood bank, it would have saved us considerable time and stress.”
