Pune, 19th October 2025: The date for Diwali in 2025 has sparked widespread confusion as the Amavasya (new moon) period in the Hindu lunar calendar spans across two days, October 20 and 21. The variation in local sunset timings across India has further divided opinions on when the festival should be observed.
According to the lunar calendar, the Amavasya Tithi begins on October 20 at 3:44 pm and ends on October 21 at 5:54 pm. As a result, cities where sunset occurs after 5:30 pm are likely to celebrate Diwali on October 20, while regions with earlier sunsets may mark the festival on October 21.
The Kashi Vidvat Parishad, a respected council of Sanskrit scholars and religious authorities based in Varanasi, has clarified that Diwali should be celebrated on October 20, 2025. In its official statement, the council stated that тАЬthe full Pradosh Vyapini period is available only on October 20,тАЭ making it the appropriate day for Lakshmi Puja, a central ritual of Diwali.
The Parishad further explained that while Amavasya extends into October 21, the required Pradosh Kaal (evening period) for worship is not available on that date. Hence, the auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja falls on October 20.
However, the confusion has deepened as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) have scheduled Muhurat trading, a symbolic one-hour trading session conducted on Diwali to mark the beginning of the new Samvat year on Tuesday, October 21.
Muhurat trading, traditionally held on the evening of Diwali, will this year take place a day later. The one-hour session for Samvat 2082 will begin at 1:45 pm on October 21. The exchanges will remain closed for regular trading before and after the Muhurat session.
