Pimpri-Chinchwad, 26th November 2025: Work on the crucial service roads along the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway 48 passing through Pimpri-Chinchwad has gathered pace following the Union Government’s approval of a ₹321 crore proposal. The project aims to solve long-pending traffic woes and ensure smoother connectivity for thousands of daily commuters, especially IT professionals traveling to and from Hinjawadi.
The approval was granted by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari after persistent follow-ups, said MLA Shankar Jagtap. He has been closely pursuing the upgrades needed for service roads at Wakad, Punawale, Tathawade, Mamurdi, Ravet, and Kiwale — key bottleneck points on the highway.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now undertaken the work at a fast pace. The asphalting from Pavana River to Punawale underpass and further up to Tathawade underpass has already been completed. The work will soon extend up to Bhujbal (Bhumkar) Chowk.
Jagtap said he is regularly monitoring progress and taking reviews to ensure timely completion. He expressed confidence that well-developed service roads will significantly reduce congestion for the public and provide major relief to IT sector employees commuting via Hinjewadi.
Relief for Hinjawadi IT Commuters
A total stretch of 9.7 km covering Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale, Ravet, and Kiwale is presently under development. Additionally, NHAI has begun work on the 12-meter-wide Development Plan (DP) road within the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits to supplement traffic movement.
Thousands of residents from Punawale, Tathawade, and adjacent areas use these roads daily to access Hinjawadi IT Park. The completed asphalting between Punawale and Tathawade underpasses will now help divert heavy traffic from the main carriageway, ensuring smoother travel during peak hours.
Highway Service Road Upgrades in Progress
Since the service roads fall under the jurisdiction of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the State Government, and NHAI — rather than PCMC — approvals were essential. Following Jagtap’s request, NHAI officials, including Project Director Sanjay Kadam, Technical Manager Ankit Yadav, Executive Engineer Subhash Ghante, and Coordinator Vinod Patil, have been instructed to expedite the pending works.
The upgraded service road network from Dehu Road to Khed-Shivapur Toll Plaza has been planned with a long-term infrastructure vision, officials confirmed.
MLA’s Statement
“The Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale, and Ravet areas are expanding rapidly with major residential and IT developments. Since the region adjoins Hinjawadi IT Park, the population is growing swiftly. To provide better connectivity and prevent future gridlock, we are prioritising well-structured service roads and subways along the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. This work is planned keeping the next 50 years in mind,” said MLA Shankar Jagtap.
