Pimpri, 13th March 2026: The Sports, Arts, Cultural and Literature Committee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will prepare an advance plan for its activities for the entire year and formulate a comprehensive policy to ensure that the committeeтАЩs work becomes more systematic and effective, Committee Chairman Kailas Kute said on Friday.
Kute was speaking during a meeting of the committee held at the Late Former Mayor Madhukarrao Pavale Hall in the main administrative building of the municipal corporation. The meeting was chaired by Kute and focused on strengthening sports, cultural and literary activities in the city, providing better facilities to sportspersons and streamlining the functioning of the committee.
Leader of the Opposition in the civic body and committee member Bhausaheb Bhoir, along with members Jitendra Nanaware, Sham Jagtap, Tanaji Barne, Dharmpal Tantrapale, Uday Gaikwad, Yogesh Landge and Pramod Kute attended the meeting. City Secretary Mukesh Kolap, Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Patil, Chetana Kerure, Special Officer Kiran Gaikwad, Public Relations Officer Praful Puranik and other municipal officials were also present. During the meeting, members expressed consensus on working in a planned manner for the overall development of sports, arts and cultural activities in the city.
During the discussion, the functioning of the sports department was reviewed and several suggestions were made. Officials were instructed to regularly check the chlorine levels in the water at all municipal swimming pools to maintain water quality. Directions were also issued to install information boards at the swimming pools so that citizens are informed about water quality standards.
The committee also directed the sports department to present a detailed report on its current policy. The report will be studied by committee members and necessary changes will be made with the consent of all members. It was also decided to prepare an advance annual plan of activities and pass a resolution regarding its implementation. A separate policy will be formulated for all initiatives of the committee, and programmes will be conducted with the participation of all members.
Members also emphasised the need to promote local artists in the cityтАЩs cultural spaces. It was suggested that theatres operated by the municipal corporation should prioritise local artists and display photographs of artists and cultural personalities from Pimpri Chinchwad instead of those from other places.
The meeting also discussed the need to improve sports infrastructure in the city. Members pointed out that many athletes from across the country visit the city for national and state-level competitions but adequate accommodation facilities are not available for them. A proposal was therefore put forward to construct a dedicated hostel for sportspersons. The committee also expressed the need to make efforts to build an international-standard cricket stadium in Pimpri Chinchwad.
Special emphasis was placed on expediting the pending works at Annasaheb Magar Stadium in Nehrunagar and completing them at the earliest. The committee also suggested taking a positive decision to allow children to use playgrounds in municipal schools on holidays so that young sportspersons can get better access to sports facilities.
In addition, it was decided to organise sports and cultural programmes at various locations in the city on May 1 to mark Labour Day. Members said such events would recognise the contribution of workers and help promote a vibrant social and cultural environment in the city.
The meeting also highlighted the shortage of coaches for different sports in the city. Officials were instructed to take necessary action to increase the number of coaches so that athletes can receive quality training. Members further discussed the need to introduce a special insurance scheme for sportspersons, noting that many athletes suffer injuries during practice or competitions but are unable to afford treatment.
Concerns were also raised over the shortage of security guards at several sports complexes and playgrounds, which could lead to safety issues. The committee suggested increasing the number of security personnel at such facilities.
Meanwhile, the meeting approved a proposal to place before the Standing Committee a resolution to lease out the Maansaheb Sou. Minatai Thackeray Swimming Pool in Yamunanagar and the Chhatrapati Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Swimming Pool in Mohannagar for three years on a rental basis.
