Pune, 10th April 2026: Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) Managing Director Shravan Hardikar on Friday outlined an ambitious roadmap for Phase 2 and future expansion of the Pune Metro network, stating that the entire Phase 2 is targeted for completion within the next five years.
Addressing a press conference at Metro Bhavan in Shivajinagar, Hardikar said key extension projects are already underway, with strict timelines in place. “The northern extension from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti Chowk is progressing well and we aim to complete it by December 2027. Similarly, the southern extension from Swargate to Katraj has also commenced, and we are targeting completion by 2029,” he said.
He added that multiple corridors under the east-west expansion have received approval from the Central Government. These include the Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi stretches. “The tender process for the Vanaz–Chandni Chowk corridor is complete and work orders have been issued. We will try to complete this stretch in the next two-and-a-half to three years,” Hardikar said.
Highlighting infrastructure integration, Hardikar said double-decker flyovers are being developed in coordination with civic agencies. “Projects with Pune Municipal Corporation and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority include double-decker flyovers along key stretches such as Ramwadi to Wagholi,” he said, adding that a 4.8-km stretch from Viman Nagar to Kharadi Bypass is in the final stages of tendering.
On operational readiness, Hardikar noted that the tendering process for civil works across major extensions is nearly complete. “We require 27 additional train sets. Orders for 12 have already been issued, and tenders for the remaining 15 will be floated soon,” he said.
He also confirmed that efforts are underway to integrate Pune Metro with the upcoming Line 3.
“A pedestrian bridge at District Court Metro Station is under construction and will be completed in two to three months, enabling seamless interchange between three metro lines. Work on integrated ticketing with all stakeholders is also in progress,” he said.
Providing details on upcoming corridors, Hardikar said Line 4—connecting Khadakwasla, Hadapsar, and Kharadi—along with a spur line from Manik Baug to Swargate, has received approval and is currently under survey. “We are in the process of appointing a funding agency and will soon initiate tenders,” he said.
He further revealed that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for additional corridors, including extensions towards Dhayari, Saswad Road, and a route up to Chakan via PCMC areas, have been prepared or are in progress. “Large-scale preparations for Phase 3 are already underway, including DPRs for the Kondhwa–NIBM Road extension and an airport connector line,” he said.
On metro expansion beyond city limits, Hardikar said, “Currently, the metro is proposed up to Chakan on the PCMC side. Proposals to extend it further, including up to the Ring Road, are under discussion and will be considered as per the Comprehensive Mobility Plan.”
Addressing alignment concerns, he clarified that the proposed metro route along Sinhagad Road remains unchanged. “The current alignment via Sinhagad Road is the most beneficial for the maximum number of citizens, and our ongoing survey is based on this alignment,” he said.
Hardikar emphasised that timely execution will depend on strong inter-agency coordination. “We are working closely with all stakeholders including PMC, PMRDA, police, and national agencies to ensure projects are completed within deadlines,” he added.
