Pimpri Chinchwad, 21st April 2026: Pimpri Chinchwad mayor Ravi Landge on Tuesday conducted an on-site inspection in Kiwale after complaints that untreated sewage from Symbiosis College and nearby housing societies was being discharged directly into the Pavana river through drains.
Landge directed civic officials to initiate immediate and stringent action against those responsible. He said that the direct discharge of sewage into the river drains was a serious environmental offence and made it clear that no compromise would be tolerated in such cases. He instructed officials to complete a survey of all housing societies in Kiwale and adjoining areas within seven days and prepare a list of those releasing sewage directly into drains.
The mayor also ordered that sewage treatment plants (STPs) in societies where such facilities exist but are non-functional must be made operational immediately. He said penalties should be imposed on societies failing to comply with environmental norms. All illegal sewage connections linked to drains flowing into the river must be identified and disconnected without delay, he added.
Landge further directed officials to impose fines on housing societies and institutions violating pollution control norms and initiate criminal proceedings wherever necessary. He said treated wastewater should be mandatorily reused for gardening, flushing and other non-potable purposes.
The mayor asked the administration to fix accountability of engineers and officials in the concerned areas and warned that negligence would invite administrative action. He also instructed departments to submit weekly progress reports and deploy technical systems for continuous monitoring.
Landge said the crackdown would not remain limited to Kiwale or the Pavana river, but would be expanded across Pimpri Chinchwad. He announced that a coordinated campaign would be launched against sewage entering the Indrayani, Mula and Pavana rivers through drains.
During discussions with the officials from the environment department, he stressed the need for permanent solutions such as interception of drains, diversion of sewage flow and routing wastewater to STPs. He said keeping rivers pollution-free was a shared responsibility of both the administration and citizens, and urged residents to report violations.
