Pimpri Chinchwad, 19th June 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has ordered the closure of the use of potable water for swimming pools and formed special inspection squads to crack down on water misuse after announcing a 15% reduction in water supply from June 20 amid dwindling reserves in the Pavana dam.
The civic body said the decision was necessitated by the alarming decline in water levels in the dam, which is the primary source of drinking water for the city, coupled with the delayed arrival of the monsoon. Officials said the measure aims to ensure adequate drinking water supply and prudent management of the available water stock in the coming weeks.
As part of the restrictions, the use of potable water for filling or maintaining swimming pools has been completely prohibited. Housing societies have been directed to use treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants (STPs) for watering gardens, lawns and trees instead of drinking water. The use of potable water for washing vehicles has also been banned.
The civic administration has further decided not to grant new water connections during the period of water rationing. Commercial establishments, construction projects and other non-domestic consumers have been asked to make independent arrangements to meet their water requirements.
PCMC has warned that punitive action will be taken against anyone found using drinking water for purposes other than domestic needs, schools and hospitals. To ensure strict implementation of the restrictions, the civic body will deploy special inspection teams to monitor water usage and take action against violators.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi appealed to citizens to use water responsibly and avoid wastage.
тАЬEvery drop saved today will ensure water security tomorrow. Citizens should cooperate with the municipal corporation by using only the required quantity of water and avoiding wastage,тАЭ Suryawanshi said.
The civic administration has also urged residents to promptly repair leakages, avoid leaving taps running unnecessarily, adopt water-saving practices at the household level and promote rainwater harvesting to help tide over the current situation.
