Pimpri, 16th July 2026: Following heavy rainfall that triggered widespread waterlogging across parts of Pimpri-Chinchwad, corporator Rahul Kalate has demanded strict action against those responsible for what he described as тАЬman-made floodingтАЭ and called for fixing accountability on builders wherever construction deficiencies have contributed to the problem.
Raising the issue during the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) General Body meeting, Kalate said several areas, including stretches along the Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway, Wakad, Tathawade and Punawale, witnessed severe waterlogging after the downpour. Water also entered the premises and basements of several residential societies, causing significant inconvenience to residents.
Kalate said the situation was not solely the result of heavy rainfall but was aggravated by poor urban planning, blocked natural drainage channels and inadequate stormwater management. He also criticised the civic administrationтАЩs disaster response, claiming that the corporation lacked sufficient water pumps to tackle flooding at multiple locations simultaneously.
He alleged that civic officials were quick to issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to builders without conducting adequate field inspections.
According to Kalate, several projects had been granted approvals despite lacking proper water supply and drainage infrastructure. He urged the Municipal Commissioner to direct the Building Permission Department to strengthen scrutiny before granting construction approvals.
Kalate said that natural streams and drainage channels had been obstructed or encroached upon during development works in several parts of the city. As a result, the natural flow of rainwater was disrupted, leading to flooding on roads, in residential societies and in basement parking areas during heavy rainfall.
He specifically referred to waterlogging incidents reported at Vinode Vasti in Wakad, 41 Elite Krishala in Tathawade, Siona Pethkar Society in Punawale and other affected locations.
He demanded a detailed investigation into these cases and sought stringent action against builders wherever construction flaws, blocked drains or planning lapses are found to have contributed to flooding.
Kalate further said that if water enters the basement of a residential society due to construction defects or inadequate drainage systems, the concerned builder should be held fully responsible.
He also urged the municipal administration to immediately inspect all flood-prone and vulnerable locations across the city and implement preventive measures to avoid similar incidents during future spells of heavy rain.
In addition, Kalate called for a joint meeting involving the civic administration, developers and office-bearers of housing societies to work out a permanent and practical solution to recurring waterlogging issues.
