Wakad, 10th January 2026: Amid intense campaigning and a flood of promises during the ongoing municipal elections, a civic initiative from Wakad has emerged as a key point of discussion. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is set to open its first-ever CBSE-affiliated school, a project that is now nearing completion and is expected to begin operations from the upcoming academic year.
The initiative has been conceptualised at the local level, with former corporator and current BJP candidate from Ward No. 25, Rahul Kalate, credited with consistently following up with the civic administration to ensure the projectтАЩs progress. The school is intended to cater not only to children of IT professionals in the area but also to students from underprivileged backgrounds, offering access to international-standard education without financial burden.
Speaking about the project, Kalate said that the Wakad CBSE school would soon become operational and would serve as an opportunity for thousands of children from poor, middle-class and working families to secure a better future. He added that the project aims to deliver education strictly as per CBSE norms, supported by modern facilities and robust infrastructure.
The CBSE school, developed by the PCMC education department as per central board norms, is being constructed in Wakad and is currently in its final phase, with around 80 per cent of the work completed. The six-storey modern building has been designed to accommodate approximately 2,500 students in the first phase and aims to provide free, quality education to children from economically weaker sections.
According to civic officials, the project has been approved at a cost of around тВ╣65 crore. The budget covers advanced educational infrastructure, including smart classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a library, sports facilities, safe access roads and an efficient school management system. The focus is on creating a secure, modern and student-friendly learning environment at the municipal level.
This will be the first CBSE school run by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, addressing a long-standing demand from parents and students in Wakad, an area that has witnessed rapid residential and IT-led growth in recent years. With the rising demand for CBSE education, especially among middle-class and working families, the civic bodyтАЩs move is being seen as a significant step towards educational equity.
Civic officials and education observers believe that the school will help expand CBSE options in the region, strengthen government-run education, and ease the financial pressure on families seeking quality schooling.
