Pimpri, 11th March 2026: Pimpri Chinchwad Mayor Ravi Landge has directed civic officials to identify ward-wise locations across the city for setting up dog care centres to improve the management and welfare of stray dogs. The instruction was issued during a review meeting of the municipal corporationтАЩs veterinary department held at the main administrative building in Pimpri.
The meeting took place at the late Mayor Madhukarrao Pavale Hall and was chaired by Mayor Landge. Discussions focused on strengthening measures related to stray dog management, healthcare, vaccination and addressing complaints raised by residents.
Landge asked officials to explore suitable spaces in each ward to establish dog care centres, which would help improve the implementation of vaccination, treatment and sterilisation programmes. тАЬThe corporation should identify appropriate locations in every ward for setting up dog care centres so that the care, vaccination and sterilisation of stray dogs can be carried out more effectively,тАЭ he said.
He also instructed officials to work in coordination with local corporators to finalise suitable sites and prepare a detailed proposal for the proposed centres.
The mayor further directed the veterinary department to conduct a detailed survey to determine the exact population of stray and pet dogs in the city, their distribution across different areas and the current status of sterilisation and vaccination drives. тАЬAn accurate assessment will help the administration plan better measures to control the stray dog population and improve animal health management,тАЭ Landge said.
He emphasised that the department should respond promptly to complaints related to dogs received from citizens and ensure better coordination to resolve such issues efficiently.
Landge said the veterinary department must adopt a more systematic and result-oriented approach to control the stray dog population while also ensuring animal welfare and maintaining a safe environment for residents.
Deputy Commissioner Sandip Khot presented an overview of the ongoing initiatives being implemented by the veterinary department. He informed that four specialised vehicles are currently deployed under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme in the city. These vehicles are used to capture stray dogs, carry out sterilisation procedures and release them back in their respective areas.
Khot added that the vehicles are also used to provide medical treatment to injured or sick animals and to respond to complaints from residents. Staff assigned to the programme have received technical training and guidance on handling animals in a humane and sensitive manner, he said.
According to Khot, the civic administration has already conducted a preliminary inspection of some potential sites for establishing dog care centres and further steps in this direction are currently underway.
Deputy Mayor Sharmila Babar, corporators Vaishali Kalbhor, Vaishali Ghodekar, Archana Saste, Anant Korhale, Mandar Deshpande, Uttam Kendale, Sanjay Kate and Suhas Kamble, along with Additional Commissioner Vikrant Bagade, Deputy Commissioner Anna Bodade, Veterinary Officer Arun Dagde and other officials were present at the meeting.
