Pune/Pimpri-Chinchwad, 6th June 2026: The Pune City Police and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police have issued prohibitory orders under Sections 37(1) and 37(3) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, imposing restrictions on public gatherings, processions, and the carrying of weapons in their respective jurisdictions for specified periods in June.

According to police officials, the measures have been taken to maintain public order and prevent any law-and-order issues during anti-encroachment drives, public events, and other activities scheduled during the period.

The timing of these simultaneous orders in the twin cities has triggered sharp political polarization. Over the past few weeks, fuel prices have reached historic highs, severely impacting transport operators, middle-class commuters, and essential commodity pricing.

Sensing a massive wave of public anger, opposition groups and civil welfare committees had planned several co-ordinated agitations across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Meanwhile, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests are also expected in many areas.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Restrictions

In Pimpri-Chinchwad, Joint Commissioner of Police Shashikant Mahavarkar issued the notification. The order will remain in force from 12:01 am on June 10, 2026, until midnight on June 23, 2026.

Under the order, gatherings of five or more persons, public meetings, rallies, and processions are prohibited without prior written permission from the competent authority.

The order also prohibits the carrying of weapons such as swords, spears, firearms, sticks, clubs, and other objects capable of causing injury. Carrying stones, missiles, corrosive substances, explosives, inflammable materials, and similar items has also been restricted.

Additionally, displaying or burning effigies, symbolic representations, or portraits intended to provoke public disorder has been prohibited. The order further restricts the use of provocative slogans, inflammatory speeches, gestures, and activities that may disturb public peace, communal harmony, or public decency.

Pune City Restrictions Extended

In Pune city, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Prashant Amrutkar, with the approval of the competent authority, has extended existing prohibitory orders from 12:01 am on June 9, 2026, until midnight on June 22, 2026.

According to the police order, intelligence inputs indicate that various political parties, social organisations, and groups may organise protests, demonstrations, marches, dharnas, bandhs, and other forms of agitation on different issues during the period.

The police have also cited ongoing anti-encroachment drives and the need for enhanced vigilance during public and religious events as reasons for imposing the restrictions.

Restrictions on Social Media Content

The Pune City Police order also cautions against the creation and dissemination of social media content that glorifies criminals or criminal gangs, spreads fear or panic among citizens, threatens public safety, or promotes unlawful activities.

The police have appealed to citizens to exercise caution while creating and sharing content on social media platforms.

Exemptions and Penalties

The prohibitory orders do not apply to government officials on duty who are authorised to carry weapons as part of their official responsibilities. Security personnel and individuals holding valid permissions issued by competent authorities are also exempt from certain provisions of the order.

Police officials have warned that violations of the prohibitory orders will attract action under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, which provides for penalties including imprisonment, fines, or both.

The police have urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, maintain public peace, and follow the restrictions during the notified period.
