Pimpri, 18th February 2026: Residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad will get relief from any increase in property tax and water charges for the 2026–27 financial year, as a proposal for a hike could not be approved before the mandatory February 20 deadline.
Under civic regulations, any proposal to raise property tax must be cleared by the Standing Committee before February 20. However, the Standing Committee has not yet been constituted in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The election of committee members is scheduled during the general body meeting on February 20, making approval within the deadline impossible.
This will mark the 12th consecutive year without a property tax increase in the city. The last revision was carried out in 2013–14, and since then nearly 7.32 lakh property owners—including residential, commercial, non-residential properties and open plots—have not faced any hike.
After returning to power for a second consecutive term in the civic body, the Bharatiya Janata Party had reportedly initiated discussions on raising property tax, water charges and licence fees for 2026–27, citing the civic body’s strained finances. Municipal finances are understood to have weakened due to several high-expenditure projects undertaken during four years of administrative rule.
The proposed hike also sparked internal differences. While a BJP MLA reportedly suggested increasing taxes during a meeting with officials, a senior office-bearer from the same constituency opposed the move, arguing that citizens should not face additional financial burden. Talk of a simmering internal rift has since circulated in civic circles.
Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar clarified that there will be no increase in property tax or water charges this year. He added that revisions in rates under the Sky Sign and Licence Department may be implemented later in the year.
